Ways to Support This Block
Practical suggestions for building this habit alongside your existing blocks
The nervous system constantly scans for safety or threat. This happens automatically and without conscious effort. Understanding your stress responses can help reduce self-criticism and increase awareness.
"Small, consistent habits build stronger structures than grand ambitious plans."
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND STRESS
When a threat is sensed, one of several responses may occur:
• Fight
• Flight
• Freeze
• Shutdown
These responses are protective. They are not choices.
FIGHT RESPONSE
Fight may look like:
• Irritability
• Anger
• Arguing
• Defensiveness
• Controlling behaviour
Internally, the body is preparing to confront a threat.
FLIGHT RESPONSE
Flight may look like:
• Avoidance
• Restlessness
• Overworking
• Perfectionism
• Difficulty switching off
The body is preparing to escape or stay busy.
FREEZE RESPONSE
Freeze may look like:
• Feeling stuck
• Zoning out
• Difficulty speaking
• Indecision
• Feeling overwhelmed
The body pauses when action feels unsafe.
SHUTDOWN RESPONSE
Shutdown may look like:
• Emotional numbness
• Low energy
• Withdrawal
• Feeling disconnected
• Hopelessness
This is the body conserving energy when overwhelmed.
IMPORTANT REMINDER
Everyone experiences different stress responses. Responses can change depending on context and life stage.
These are not personality traits. They are nervous system states.
WHY AWARENESS MATTERS
When people understand their stress response:
• Self-criticism reduces
• Shame decreases
• Choice increases
• Regulation becomes possible
Awareness is the first step toward change.
